Ferrari has released its latest race-ready 488, the GT3 Evo, which will go head-to-head with stripped out McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, and Porsche racers on circuits around the world.
It's still powered by a 90-degree turbocharged V8 engine with its outputs determined by the FIA's Balance of Performance regulations.
The company says it spent more than 18,000 hours working on CFD simulations and wind-tunnel testing for the new front end, which has a smaller section beneath the headlights, a pair of flicks to generate extra downforce, and bigger turning vanes in the splitter.
The smiley face isn't just for looks, apparently. Owners of the existing 488 GT3 can have their car upgraded to Evo spec.
Plus, the vents atop the front fenders are larger, the front section of the door is more tapered, and the rear venting has been totally redesigned.
It looks similar to the 488 GT3 it replaces, but the Evo rides on a longer wheelbase in search of greater stability, less tyre wear, and to better support drivers who want to enter the car into 'GTE' class races.
Because it's lighter than before, teams running the GT3 Evo will have more freedom to move ballast around for better balance.
The car's electronic systems – ABS, traction control – have been reworked to match the changes to the chassis.
Inside, there's a new seat designed to meet FIA safety regulations. That means it's more rigid, but also weighs 2.4kg less than the unit it replaces.
If its endurance racing you're into, there's a 24 hour package with extra lighting in the front bumper, quick-fill capability for the oil and coolant, a carbon clutch, uprated brake calipers, and steel wheel nuts.
This being a Ferrari, there are still options – namely, Le Mans spec LED lights up front.
