Opel: Eight electrified models on sale by 2021

French-owned German brand commits to electrification of all its model lines over the coming years.

German brand Opel is surging ahead with its 'Charge!' electrification strategy, promising a total of eight electrified vehicles "in important volume segments" by 2021.

"We will electrify our entire product portfolio by 2024. Further models will follow very soon after we made the start with the Corsa-e and the Grandland X Hybrid4 this year," said Michael Lohscheller, CEO for Opel and Vauxhall.

In 2020 the Vivaro commercial van will get an EV model, as will the replacement for the Mokka X baby crossover.

From there, the Combo and Combo Life vans will be given all-electric options, and the Vivaro Life van-based people mover will get an EV version in 2021.

The next-generation Astra small car has also been confirmed to offer an electrified model, though there's no firm time frame for its release just yet.

"This product portfolio will put us in an excellent position to meet the ambitious future emission targets in Europe," Lohscheller continued.

"Electro-mobility is an indispensable component in this. But our ultra-modern and efficient combustion engines and research into fuel cells at the Rüsselsheim-based Centre of Competence will also make an important contribution to making our company sustainable and future-proof."

While not explicitly mentioned in Opel's media release, the Crossland X and Insignia will likely round out the electrified rollout heading into 2024. The Crossland X shares its underpinnings with the current Peugeot 2008, with the next-generation model likely to have a lot in common with Peugeot's latest model revealed earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Insignia is currently based on a platform derived from previous owners, General Motors, with a next-generation model likely to switch to the PSA Group's EMP2 platform shared with various models including the similarly sized Peugeot 508 – which already offers a plug-in hybrid model overseas.

Australia

While the Opel brand is no longer sold Down Under, it's unclear what's in store for the Holden-badged Astra and Commodore in the coming years.

The next-generation Astra and Commodore (Insignia) will likely not be offered here in their next generation as Holdens, but we could see the PSA Group expand its operations in Australia with select Opel products alongside the Citroen and Peugeot brands – while the rumour mill has indicated this is a possibility, nothing is confirmed at this stage.

Peugeot's local division is working on potentially offering the e-208 and 508 Hybrid4, though hasn't confirmed if and when these vehicles will be available for sale.
