Genesis GV80 spied, powertrain details revealed

Engine details have been revealed for Genesis’s first crossover, the GV80, as it continues to shed camouflage ahead of an imminent debut.

This is the most revealing look yet at Genesis’s first crossover, the GV80, ahead of its anticipated debut at this year’s Los Angeles motor show.

The Korean Car Blog reports Hyundai and Kia revealed the specs of the GV80’s engine range at the 2019 Hyundai-Kia International Powertrain Conference this week.

The GV80 will use three different engines, according to the report.

The first is a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 226kW. It’s the latest in Hyundai’s Theta engine family, referred to as Theta-III. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four in the Genesis G70, among other cars, is referred to as Theta-II and produces 179kW. That means the new engine has a healthy bump in power.

The next step up is a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 producing 283kW and 529Nm. It’s called the Smartstream G3.5 T-GDi and it’s the next-generation version of the 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 currently doing duty in the Genesis G70, Kia Stinger and overseas Genesis G80 and G90 models. The new engine is good for another 11kW and 18Nm over the existing 3.3-litre and features new cooling and fuel injection systems.

Finally, The Korean Car Blog reports there’s a new 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 with 207kW and 588Nm. It’s the first six-cylinder oiler for the Genesis brand albeit not the first diesel – currently, the G70 and G80 are available in some markets with a 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder.

It doesn’t appear the GV80 will be offered with a V8 engine after all. Currently, the G80 and G90 sedans offer Hyundai’s 5.0-litre Tau V8 in other markets. There’s also no word on any hybrid or electric GV80 models.

Hyundai and Kia have also developed an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, though it’s unclear which GV80 engine this will be mated to.

The GV80 will measure 4945mm long, 1975mm wide and 1715mm tall. That makes it almost identical in dimensions to the BMW X5, although the GV80 will be 29mm narrower.

As the spy shots reveal – if you squint past the camo – the belt line is sharply raked aft of the C-pillar for a more athletic appearance strongly reminiscent of the GV80 concept. What hasn’t been confirmed is whether the GV80 will feature an available third row of seating like the rival BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.

Overall, the production GV80 hews closely to the titular concept, from its pentagonal grille to its bisected head and tail lights. Don’t expect too many surprises when the sheet is pulled off at next month’s Los Angeles motor show, ahead of an expected 2020 introduction.

More of a mystery is the Korean luxury brand’s planned third crossover. Though we’ve seen spy shots of the upcoming GV70, set to launch in 2021, we don’t know anything further about the third crossover.
