Porsche and LucasFilm to reveal Star Wars spaceship

"I'll write this one."

As the only science fiction nerd in the Drive team, this writer didn't exactly have to wrestle for the rights to cover news that Porsche and LucasFilm have partnered up on designing a sleek Star Wars starship.

“Even though they do not seem to share many elements at first glance, both worlds have a similar design philosophy," says Michael Mauer, Vice President, Style Porsche at Porsche AG.

"The close collaboration with the Star Wars design team inspires and fascinates us – I’m sure that both sides can draw major benefits from this exchange.”

LucasFilm design boss Doug Chiang echoed Mauer's sentiments, saying the global success of the Star Wars and Porsche brands has been "shaped decisively" by their lasting, iconic design themes.

There's little to see for now, with both groups still working through sketches and concepts.

The final model, hopefully life-sized, will be displayed at the premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December. Porsche will use the opportunity to show off the new all-electric Taycan, too.

Given the timing of this project, it is supremely unlikely we'll see the special new collaborative ship design in The Rise of Skywalker, but perhaps it'll show up in a later extended cut for home audiences.

Also, how rad is this video of the Taycan rocketing head-on at a Tie Fighter?

Of course, this all raises the most obvious nerd question: is Porsche somehow canon in the Star Wars universe? Of course not, given the saga occurs a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… but it's fun to wonder.

(And I don't hate the idea of Porsche launching some grey-on-black Vader Edition models…)

This isn't the first time the Star Wars brand has been tied to a car manufacturer, either. On Drive alone, we've written about Nissan's Millennium Falcon and X-Wing versions of the X-Trail SUV (oh dear), along with the Holden Racing Team's collab with LucasFilm on Star Wars-themed race cars.

What are your favourite Hollywood and carmaker collaborations? Audi and Lexus's futuristic concepts are obvious standouts, and Bugatti's hoverjet thingy in the film Elysium offered an interesting preview of one possible future for the hyper-expensive marque.
