Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition unveiled

The 30-year run of the famous flat-four engine comes to an end with a limited edition model for the domestic market.

The Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition, with its soon-to-be pensioned off engine, made its debut alongside the far more modern Levorg Prototype at the 2019 Tokyo motor show.

Based on the WRX STI Type S, the Final Edition is powered by a EJ20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot boxer engine tuned to produce 227kW of power and 422Nm of torque. All of this is, naturally, delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

Clearly in a mood to entice those born in a certain era, the EJ20 Final Edition rides on gold-coloured 19-inch BBS alloy wheels with 245/35 tyres. Stopping ability comes courtesy of 18-inch Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers at the front, and two-pot units at the rear.

The grille and rear bumper wear Cherry Red highlights, while the cabin has Recaro front seats covered in a mixture of leather and faux suede.

Other features include silver seatbelts, fake suede for the steering wheel, silver stitching, black wing mirrors and a large rear spoiler.

Production of the Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition is limited to 555 units. If that seems like an odd number, remember that Subaru's rally team was born in an era when advertising restrictions were far more lax.

The EJ20 Final Edition is priced from ¥4,110,000 ($55,400), and the order books will remain open until December 23, 2019, assuming there's any left by then.
