Hyundai Sonata and Nexo land speed record vehicles unveiled

Last month Hyundai hit the Bonneville salt flats with two of its greenest vehicles, one barely changed from stock and the other extensively modified.

Hyundai has confirmed it attempted two world land speed records at the Bonneville salt flats in the US state of Utah on September 25, 2019.

In the hydrogen fuel-cell category, a lightly modified Hyundai Nexo hit a top speed of 170.85km/h (106.16mph).

While the Nexo was fitted with high-speed aero valance underneath the bumper, the rest of its changes are safety related and include a safety cage, Sparco Ergo safety seat with a six-point safety harness, fire extinguisher, and window and arm restraint safety nets.

The Sonata was gunning for the petrol-electric record, and hit a top speed at the salt flats of 265.01km/h (164.669mph).

In order to achieve such a high v-max, the Sonata was extensively modified from stock. The record-setting car rode on narrow Goodyear Eagle 28x1.5-15 tyres with Vision Rally 55 race wheels and Mooneyes moon disc covers.

It also featured a KW Suspensions package, and custom-made high speed brakes.

Drivetrain changes included a nitrous setup, custom exhaust system, and new engine software. For the record attempt, the car was fed race fuel.

Both records are pending FIA verification. The vehicles will be displayed at the Hyundai stand at the 2019 SEMA show in Las Vegas next month.
