2020 BMW M3 leaked

BMW's upcoming 3 Series flagship, the hotted-up 2020 M3, has been snapped on the production line.

Finished in Melbourne Red, the car has a set of aggressively-flared arches and a subtle carbon-fibre lip spoiler on the bootlid. The images were published on Bimmerpost.

The roof is finished in body colour, which suggests it isn't a carbon-fibre unit. We'd suggest a lighter roof will be optional or offered on higher-spec Competition models, but this hasn't been confirmed by BMW.

It's hard to tell, but the exhaust pipes and rear diffuser appear unfinished (although some forum members have also suggested the diffuser's odd look could be down to reflections from the metal floor).

We'd suggest the quad pipes will be finished with more stylised tips to better fill the space back there.

When it launches, the new M3 will be offered with a choice of rear- and all-wheel drive. It's also expected to have a manual to accompany its torque-converter automatic, although BMW M boss Markus Flasch has (just) stopped short of 100 per cent confirming it.

Power in the M3 will come from a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine dubbed S58, debuted in the new X3 M and X4 M.

The development team has focused on delivering snappy throttle response and a free-revving character, neither of which are traditional strengths of turbocharged engines.
