2020 Audi A6 55 TFSI e quattro plug-in hybrid sedan revealed

New plug-in hybrid drivetrain option is now available in Europe, and promises up to 53km of pure electric driving.

October 22: The proliferation of plug-in hybrid options across Audi's range continues, with the company unveiling the Audi A6 55 TFSI e quattro overnight.

UPDATE October 24, 8:50am: Audi has provided new imagery of the A6. We've updated the pictures in our story text.

The A6 55 TFSI e's all-wheel drive setup has a 185kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 105kW electric motor built into the car's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Total system output is 270kW of power and 500Nm of torque. With both motors working together, the TFSI e is capable of completing the 0-100km/h run in 5.6 seconds, and hitting a top speed of 250km/h.

The plug-in hybrid A6 features a 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack. When fully charged the car has a pure electric driving range of 53 kilometres using the WLTP testing protocol, and a top speed of 135km/h.

There are three driver-selectable driving modes available: EV, Hybrid and Hold, which conserves battery charge for future driving.

In Europe, the A6 55 TFSI e is fitted with matrix LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, red brake calipers, a fully digital instrumentation cluster, and climate control air conditioning as standard.

The S line styling package, which includes dark tinted windows, black exterior trim, and black wing mirror caps, is also fitted as standard.

Australia

The Audi A6 55 TFSI e quattro is available for order now in Germany, and has a starting price of €68,850 ($112,000). Thanks to its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, the car's annual road tax in its homeland is reduced by half.

Yesterday, Shaun Cleary, head of corporate communications for Audi Australia, told CarAdvice "these ‘e’ PHEV models are part of our consideration for future rollout of electrification in Australia".

He noted the local launch in 2020 of the e-tron crossover, the company's first mainstream pure electric car, is the local arm's "priority".
