Mazda: Company’s first electric vehicle will be a ‘coupe SUV’
The yet-to-be-named EV will also feature friendly face and a 'unique door concept'.
Mazda is set to debut its first electric vehicle at the 2019 Tokyo motor show next week, and the latest teaser has confirmed it will be a crossover.
The tall body and large glasshouse in the teaser image confirms our suspicions the EV would be a crossover, and spy photos of a development mule wearing a CX-30 body indicated as much.
According to Mazda, the new car will have a "coupe-like" cabin, and from the video released overnight (below) we can see the sloping rear end typical of a "coupe SUV".
The car is said to continue the company's Kodo and "human modern" design language, and develop the themes first seen on the latest Mazda 3 range.
Mazda says the EV will include a "unique door concept" and a "friendly expression" for the front end.
If recent cars are anything to go by, the new electric crossover will also feature a high-end near-luxury interior. We already know the car will feature a new gear shifter.
A prototype with a CX-30 body had its front wheels connected to a 105kW/264Nm electric motor fed by a 35.5kWh battery pack.
Rumours suggest the new car will be offered as both a pure EV, and a range-extended electric car with an on-board internal combustion engine, possibly a rotary, capable of recharging the batteries.
