Renault Megane RS Trophy-R price announced, Record Edition up for auction

The rarest Renault ever brought to Australia – the Megane RS Trophy R Record Edition that set the fastest lap at the Nurburgring for front-drive cars – will be auctioned for sale when it arrives in early 2020.

It will be one of only 32 Megane RS Record Editions built worldwide and comes with carbon-fibre wheels made in Australia (and used by Ferrari and the Ford GT supercar) and and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Meanwhile, just 12 examples of the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R – on which the Record Edition is based – will be imported out of global batch of 500 vehicles.

However, they are already sold despite Australian customers only finding out the $74,990 plus on-roads costs in the past 24 hours.

Interested buyers can go to www.renault.com.au to place their names on a waiting list in case someone’s deal falls over.

The Megane RS Trophy-R is identified by its bright red wheels, unique graphics and vented carbon fibre bonnet and has a 300hp version of the 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder engine instead of the standard 280hp output.

The back seats have been removed and the vehicle has had a complete performance overhaul.

“Renault Sport team used all the knowledge and expertise accumulated with F1 involvement to make this car the fastest front-wheel-drive in the world without even needing any additional power,” said Charly Clercin, product planning manager at Renault Australia.

“Instead, the focus has been put on three key pillars: mass reduction, aero (dynamics) and radical suspension,” he said, noting the addition of an Akrapovic titanium exhaust and carbon-fibre rear diffuser, ultra-light Sabelt Alcantara seats, a high capacity lithium battery, a lighter rear axle, adjustable Ohlins shock-absorbers, and Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres that are exclusive to Renault Sport.

However, Renault will share some of the Trophy-R power with more affordable models in the range.

The 220kW Trophy-R engine will also be fitted to the new Megane RS Trophy model, priced from $52,990 plus on-roads for a manual and $55,990 plus on-roads for an automatic.

Visually, these examples will look the same as the regular Megane RS Sport (from $45,990 plus on-road costs) and Megane RS Cup editions (from $48,990 plus on-road costs).

Renault Australia initially reported that the new Megane RS models would arrive in December 2019 but the delivery forecast has been pushed back to early 2020 to account for any shipping delays out of Europe.
