2021 Genesis GV70 spied in new camouflage

Spy photographers have captured the upcoming Genesis GV70 crossover undergoing testing ahead of its global reveal.

UPDATE: Following our earlier look at the new 2021 Genesis GV70 as it lapped the Nurburgring (shown in this story in the black-and-white vinyl camouflage), a new prototype has appeared in South Korea with a heavy canvas camouflage.

The latest spy photos don't offer a great deal of detail, but it is clear we can expect to see the same new two-row lighting design at both ends, as recently revealed on the new G80 sedan and GV80 SUV, and spied on the upcoming G70 facelift.

We've added those photos – first published on The Korean Car Blog – to the body and gallery for this story, which is otherwise unchanged.

The new GV70 is expected to debut in October.

Spy photographers have captured the first photos of the upcoming Genesis GV70 crossover undergoing testing at the Nürburgring.

Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis launched with three sedans, the G70, G80 and (in other markets) the G90. All are capable, elegant luxury sedans but they’re just that – sedans. To truly make an impact in the luxury market, the fledgling brand needs to develop crossovers. Fortunately, it’s doing just that.

In addition to the GV80, Genesis is readying a rival to the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

It’ll wear the GV70 nameplate, owing to its positioning within the Genesis line-up and its use of the G70 sedan’s underpinnings. Expect, then, to see the G70’s powertrain line-up carried over.

Engine options for the GV70 are likely to mirror those expected in the facelifted G70 sedan, including the new 279kW/588Nm 3.5-litre turbo petrol V6 (replacing the current 272kW/510Nm 3.3-litre unit), along with the new 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine that debuted in the new G80 and GV80. The new four-cylinder engine replaces the 180kW/353Nm unit currently in use.

Though all G70s sold in Australia are rear-wheel drive, there are all-wheel drive G70s (and G80s) available overseas. Given the GV70 is a crossover, expect it to lob here with all-wheel drive. Whether all-paw ability will be standard or an option here isn’t yet known.

A diesel engine is also expected, although this will likely be the company's smaller 148kW/440Nm 2.2-litre unit rather than the big new inline-six 3.0-litre diesel found in the new GV80.

Even more so than the GV80, the smaller GV70 has rather curvaceous styling that appears to blur the lines between the styling of traditional crossovers and coupe crossovers.

The rake of the D-pillars is almost reminiscent of the defunct Infiniti QX70 or the Porsche Macan, not bad designs with which to find parallels.

Genesis’s new design language – first introduced on the refreshed 2020 G90 – is evident at the front. That means a dramatic, diamond-patterned and shield-shaped grille. It appears to come to less of a defined point than the G90, however, instead resembling the G70’s subtler and more squared-off grille.

The GV70 is set to launch in 2021, approximately a year after the GV80.
