2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe revealed, here early 2020

BMW has revealed the first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupe in full, ahead of its arrival in the first quarter of 2020.

Based on the same front- and all-wheel drive platform as the Mini line-up and the new 1 Series hatchback, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is aimed at the Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class sedans. That means a coupe-ish roofline and four frameless doors, in an attempt to walk the line between style and substance.

A range of models will be offered abroad: the 218i, 220d and the M235i xDrive. BMW Australia hasn't confirmed which engines will be offered in Australia, but mentions only the M235i in its press materials, so we'd suggest it's a likely candidate to come Down Under.

It's powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine outputting 225kW and 450Nm, put to the road through all four wheels through an adaptive M xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Meanwhile, the 218i is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine making 103kW and 220Nm, good for an 8.5-second sprint to 100km/h. That power is put to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard.

The 220d isn't offered as an option on the 1 Series hatchback Down Under, suggesting it's less likely to make the journey to Australia. It's a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel making 140kW and 400Nm.

Inside, the dash is identical to that of the latest 1 Series hatch. That means it features the latest BMW OS7.0 infotainment system, with two 10.25 inch displays and natural voice inputs.

The rear backrest folds 40/20/40, and there's 430L of boot space with them in place. That's down 30L on the Mercedes-Benz CLA, but identical to the regular A-Class sedan.

Unlike the CLA, which is actually longer than the regular C-Class sitting above it in the Mercedes line-up, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is just under 200mm shorter than the 3 Series sedan, 27mm narrower, and 15mm shorter at the top of its roof.
