ANCAP: Hyundai Kona Electric maintains 5-star rating in audit tests

ANCAP has released the results of audit crash testing it conducted on the Hyundai Kona Electric to verify manufacturer-supplied data for the electric crossover.

The Kona Electric carried over the 2017-stamped five-star safety rating from its petrol-powered equivalent when it was released earlier this year.

"Given the increasing focus on electric and alternative powered vehicles, and to verify the validity of manufacturer-supplied data for electric vehicle variants, the Kona Electric was selected for an ANCAP audit test," the local crash-testing firm said in a release.

For the audit test, ANCAP subjected the Kona Electric to a single frontal offset test at 64km/h in September, which aims to assess the following:

Assess the effect of increased vehicle mass on the structural performance of the vehicle and on injury response of the 50th percentile male adult dummies.

Verify the manufacturer-supplied data for electric variants.

Examine the effectiveness of electrical safety systems in the vehicle.

Examine any areas of interest relating to battery structural integrity and potential fire risk.

Confirm the validity of the published star rating of the Hyundai Kona Electric

The results of the test found that "behaviour" of the petrol and electric versions of the Kona was consistent, though the Kona Electric actually performed slightly better in a couple of areas.

In 2017 the petrol Kona achieved a score of 14.07 points out of 16.00 for the frontal offset assessment, where the Kona Electric managed 14.97 out of 16.00 in the audit test due to a slight improvement in the protection of the front passenger's chest in the EV version.

As a result, the existing five-star rating with 2017 time stamp has been maintained for the Kona Electric.

"Representatives from NSW Fire & Rescue, Queensland Fire & Emergency Services and the Electric Vehicle Council were on hand to witness the test. The wreck is being donated to NSW Fire & Rescue for research and training purposes," ANCAP said.

Pricing for the Hyundai Kona Electric starts at $59,990 plus on-road costs for the Elite model, and rises to $64,990 plus on-road costs for the flagship Highlander.
