2020 Toyota Mirai concept revealed for Tokyo motor show

Toyota has handed down a first look at its next-generation 2020 Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV), ahead of this month's Tokyo motor show.

Continuing Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda's mandate for a more emotionally-inspired design theme across the brand's model lines, the new concept boasts a look that is sportier and more imposing in its proportions than the quirky futuristic look of the current Mirai.

Toyota says the concept's design is intended to demonstrate that future-focused powertrains can still deliver a rewarding drive.

On the styling front, that means a four-door coupe-like design, with a lower and wider appearance, hunkered down on 20-inch wheels.

Best of all for family-hauling driving enthusiasts, the new Mirai concept is both rear-wheel-drive and a five-seater.

Inside, the Mirai concept offers what looks to be a production-ready design, with EV-appropriate copper accents against a black trim (with it's still a family car grey headliner above).

A big 12.3-inch main display sits proud atop the dash, flanking a large digital instrument display behind the steering wheel.

"We have pursued the goal of making a car that customers will feel they want to drive all time, a car that has an emotional and attractive design and the kind of dynamic and responsive performance that can bring a smile to the driver's face," says Mirai chief engineer Yoshikazu Tanaka.

"I want customers to say, 'I chose the Mirai not just because it's an FCEV, but because I simply wanted this car; it just happens to be an FCEV.' We will continue our development work focusing on that feeling, and we hope that with the new Mirai we will be a leader in helping realise a hydrogen energy society."

Efficiency remains the Mirai's primary focus, of course, and the Japanese giant says it is targeting a 30 per cent increase over the current model's driving range, which should therefore promise a number just beyond 700 kilometres.

Australia

No other technical or launch details have been revealed at this time, but we expect Toyota will offer more at the Tokyo motor show later this month.

Although it couldn't offer confirmation of Mirai availability for Australia, Toyota said "it’s certainly a product we’re putting our hands up for should it be made available for our market".
