Korando, 3 Series, S60/V60 get 5-star ANCAP ratings

Latest round of safety tests see several new models get top marks based on Euro NCAP assessment.

ANCAP has released its latest round of safety ratings, including five-star scores for the new BMW 3 Series, SsangYong Korando, and Volvo S60/V60.

The independent crash-testing firm was quick to highlight the all-new Korando's results, given it's the first time SsangYong has achieved a five-star safety rating.

"This is a positive step up from SsangYong, and both the brand and their Australasian representatives should be proud of their efforts in supplying their first five-star vehicle to our market,” said ANCAP Chief Technical Officer, Mark Terrell.

"Five stars is not only possible, it is the expected standard, and the entry of this model provides fleet and private consumers with an additional choice in the popular and competitive Medium SUV segment."

The Korando scored 88 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 86 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 68 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 72 per cent for Safety Assist.

ANCAP's five-star ratings apply to all versions of the Korando sold in Australia and New Zealand, including the upcoming petrol model detailed in the ANCAP scorecard that hasn't gone on sale yet.

Also scoring five stars were the all-new Volvo S60 and V60 twins, which both impressed with maximum points for children in the two destructive crash tests.

Both managed 96 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 88 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 74 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 77 per cent for Safety Assist. The five-star rating applies to all versions of the S60 and V60 bar the T8 plug-in hybrid models.

"The frontal offset and side impact tests represent the crash types where we see the greatest number of fatalities, and these models performed well with full points achieved for critical body regions. The width of the rear seating row does however limit the safe installation of some child restraints in the centre seating position," Mr. Terrell said.

Finally, the BMW 3 Series fared well across the board, achieving 97 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 87 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 87 per cent to Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 77 per cent for Safety Assist.

"The 3 Series is equipped with a full range of driver assistance technologies and performed well in tests of its ability to detect vulnerable road users, either avoiding or mitigating collisions with pedestrians and cyclists across a range of scenarios," Mr. Terrell said.

ANCAP's five-star rating for the 3 Series applies to all variants bar the M340i xDrive M Performance model.

It's worth noting that the local crash-testing firm's scores are all based on Euro NCAP testing, all of which assessed left-hand drive versions of European-spec vehicles.
