2021 BMW M5 spied
Refreshed super sedan heads out for pre-production testing wearing a new nose inspired by the 3 Series.
Photographers have snapped the upcoming facelift for the BMW M5 during development testing, with less camouflage than previously seen.
Anticipated to be on track for a 2020 reveal, the updated M5 appears to draw heavily from the latest 3 Series, with sharper and slimmer headlights and a new LED daytime-running light signature.
Unlike the larger 7 Series, it doesn't look like the 5er will get a ridiculously large snout, while the front bumper is a pre-production unit so expect more changes there.
The changes at the rear look to be a little more subtle, with rejigged tail-lights the only obvious difference we can see mon these prototypes.
Given the entire rear fascia is covered in camouflage, though, there could be more changes in store for the bootlid and rear bumper, too.
We don't have images of the interior yet, but it's expected the 5 Series 'LCI' will get an upgraded cabin incorporating BMW's latest OS7.0 infotainment interface with a 10.25-inch central infotainment display and a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as per the company's latest models.
As for the powertrain, the M5 should soldier on with the current 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, available in at least two states of tune – 'standard' and 'Competition'.
The current M5 Competition makes a hefty 460kW and 750Nm, channelled to the tarmac via a rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission.
A CS track special is said to be in the works, as is a more powerful V8 engine. For now, we'll have to wait and see whether the Bavarian marque will add more grunt to the 'regular' M5's powertrain.
