Suzuki reveals concepts ahead of Tokyo motor show

Suzuki is preparing a troupe of cute concepts for the 2019 Tokyo motor show, headlined by the compact Wako SPO coupe.

Built to embody the tagline "Waku Waku switch for everyone: Excitement for you, excitement for everyone" (seriously), the range of concept cars preview everything from a plug-in hybrid coupe to a self-driving living room on wheels.

Wako SPO

The Wako SPO is a compact, classically-proportioned coupe with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Suzuki hasn't disclosed outputs or range, but the company has previously confirmed it's working on a plug-in hybrid Vitara, so the expertise to develop such a powertrain exists within head office.

The company says the SPO is a "a personal compact PHEV that everyone can share fun and excitement, anywhere, anytime" from behind the wheel. Although it's usable day-to-day, it's also been developed with 'pleasure' in mind.

Inside, there's a switch allowing the driver to change what's being displayed at the front of the car (based on the images, we'd suggest the grille lights up) and on the dashboard.

Hanare

As the motoring world pushes towards self-driving vehicles, Suzuki has tried to imagine how the technology could fit within Japan's kei car rules.

Designed to mimic a detached cottage (which is what 'hanare' means in Japanese), the van-like concept "prioritises human values". Other manufacturers have attempted to do that with lounge-like seating and infotainment systems that look like home entertainment setups.

Suzuki says the cabin will be flexible, meeting different use cases and 'scenes', but hasn't detailed exactly how that will manifest.

Hustler concepts

Finally, the company will show a pair of concepts based on its Hustler kei-crossover. The first wears a raft of SUV-aping body add-ons, including a front 'bash plate' and blacked-out wheel arch extensions, while the second has been kitted out with a roof rack, graphics, and some throwback 'HUSTLER' graphics.

Or, as Suzuki puts it: "By featuring colouring that lifts your spirits, decals and roof wrapping that add a fashionable accent, as well as a roof rack that expresses playfulness, it proposes a fashionable urban outdoor style you will enjoy anywhere you go, whether driving around town or heading to the great outdoors."

Every go-everywhere baby room

Finally, the Every go-anywhere baby room is designed to be a kei-car commercial vehicle with space for a baby change table or the privacy to breastfeed.

Given the space on offer inside, Suzuki also says it could be used as a shelter in natural disasters.
