Mitsubishi Triton Toby Price edition goes on sale

Australian off-road and enduro motorcycle world champion has put his name to a limited edition Mitsubishi Triton.

Mitsubishi has finally released a Toby Price special edition of the Triton ute – two years after the off-road and enduro motorcycle world champion became an ambassador for the brand.

The two-time Dakar Rally winner – in 2016 and in 2019 while nursing a broken wrist – will put his name to 500 Toby Price editions of the Mitsubishi Triton and each will come with a certificate numbered 1 to 500.

The Toby Price Mitsubishi Tritons are based on the GLS grade, and come with a black sports bar, black nudge bar, LED light bar, tinted bonnet protector, weathershields, Triton door decals, a Toby Price logo on each rear fender, and a soft tonneau cover.

There are no suspension or performance upgrades, and the accessories are fitted in Australia by Autocare before being shipped to dealers. Only three colours are available: Sunflare Orange, Graphic Grey and White Diamond.

At $50,640 plus on-road costs it equates to about $54,000 drive-away at full price. By comparison the leather-lined flagship GLS Premium has been $50,990 drive-away for most of this year, and runout models have recently dipped to $48,990 drive-away.

The Toby Price edition is $3640 dearer than the GLS on which it is based, which officially starts from $46,990 plus on-road costs, but has been at $46,990 drive-away for most of this year and has recently dropped to $44,990 while in runout.

Mitsubishi says it will see how well the first 500 examples are received before it decides on doing another run.

When asked if there was scope to do a Toby Price limited edition of the two-door space cab — given it is the only model in the Triton range with a tray that can fit a dirt bike — Mitsubishi executives said they were still studying other options.

While the space cab market is massive in Thailand, it only represents about five per cent of ute sales in Australia, with four-door double cab variants dominating the local market.

Toby Price has made numerous cameo appearances in TV advertisements for the Mitsubishi Triton. In the latest ad he is seen in the passenger seat while the vehicle performs numerous stunts.

The world champion was meant to be behind the wheel, but was nursing a broken wrist at the time of filming. He is expected to appear more prominently in future advertisements.
