2020 Ford ‘Baby Bronco’ spied

The new crossover will be a brawny-looking alternative to the more car-like Escape, although both vehicles will use the same underpinnings.

With the latest Escape looking more like its Focus platform-mate than ever before, Ford has identified a need for a compact crossover with more rugged, square-rigged styling. Enter what many are calling the “baby Bronco”.

Its boxy silhouette should bear a resemblance to the reborn, adventure-ready Ranger-based Bronco that’s currently in development. Unlike the big daddy Bronco, however, the baby Bronco will utilise monocoque construction.

The upcoming crossover will be roughly the same size as the Escape. To that end, the “baby Bronco” — which is rumoured to branded either Adventurer or Bronco Sport — will ride the same platform as the Escape and borrow its engines.

It’s a similar strategy to the one employed by Jeep with its first-generation Compass and Patriot models.

In America, the Escape’s engine range consists of a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder, a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid, and a 2.5-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid.

Across the water in Europe, the almost-identical Kuga can also be had with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. Whether the Baby Bronco will receive all these powertrain options is unclear.

Even under the boxy camouflage, you can see this is decidedly more upright than the new Escape. You needn’t use your imagination to figure out what’s underneath the disguise as we’ve already published leaked photos, from a Ford dealer conference last year in Las Vegas, showing the car's exterior.

The crossover's interior, however, has yet to be leaked. Our spy photography agency was able to snap a shot of this tester's cabin, but the dashboard was heavily concealed.

The new foal is expected to reach North American showrooms some time in 2020, but there’s no word yet as to when it’ll make its motor show debut.

Australia

There’s also no word on whether we’ll get the baby Bronco here. Ford’s been slowly moving away from its One Ford strategy and this has been most evident with its crossovers.

For example, the new Territory, a restyled Yusheng S330, is exclusive to China, while the cute little Puma has so far been confirmed only to be sold in Europe.
