Maserati’s first electrified cars coming in 2020

Italian luxury car maker will enter a new era when its electric sports car launches next year.

Maserati will begin its push into the world of electrified drivetrains in 2020 when it launches its long-awaited "totally new" sports car.

Expected to be inspired by the 2014 Alfieri concept (below), the new two-door vehicle will be made at the company's plant in Modena.

According to the company's last five-year plan, announced in 2018, the sports car will built on a aluminium spaceframe chassis, and be available as both a coupe and a convertible.

At least two drivetrains will be available: a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric version with three motors, all-wheel drive, torque vectoring and an 800V electrical system.

The EV variant will reportedly complete the 0-100km/h dash in around two seconds.

Next year will also see the launch of an updated version of the Ghibli sedan with a hybrid powertrain.

In 2021 the company will begin production of a new crossover vehicle at Fiat Chrysler's factory in Cassino, which currently manufactures the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.

As such, the new crossover will utilise Alfa's Giorgio rear- and all-wheel drive platform, and slot in below the Levante. This car will be available with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Maserati is also promising a replacement for the GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio. These cars "will herald the full electrification era for Maserati", and will be produced at a refurbished Turin factory, although no launch date has been announced.

The Italian manufacturer says the new two-door vehicles and crossover will complement continuous improvements to the existing Levante, Quattroporte and Ghibli models.

Additionally, all new and updated vehicles will be fitted with "enhanced" highway assistance for Level 2 autonomy.
