2020 Volvo XC40 Electric to be unveiled in October

The Volvo XC40 EV will be unveiled next month and the automaker claims it "will be one of the safest cars we have ever built".

Volvo has reinforced the front end as it no longer holds a bulky internal combustion engine. It has also reinforced the rear, and integrated the electric powertrain into the body structure so it is easier to distribution collision forces away from the passenger cell.

The XC40's battery pack lives in an extruded aluminium safety cage positioned under the floor in the centre of car, which, it says, lowers the XC40's centre of gravity and reduce the risk of roll over.

In addition to the structural enhancements, the XC40 Electric will be the first Volvo to feature the company's new Advanced Driver Assistance System, which features an array of radar, camera and ultrasonic sensor units.

According to the Swedish automaker, the new safety architecture is scalable and "lays the foundation for the future introduction of autonomous drive technology".

We don't know anything about the XC40 Electric's drivetrain, but it could share some components with the Polestar 2, which has a total of 300kW/660Nm from its two electric motors.

Equipped with a 78kWh battery, the Polestar 2 has a range estimate of around 500 kilometres. Both the Polestar 2 and XC40 ride on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

The company will release more details regarding the XC40 Electric in the weeks leading up to its debut.
