2021 Mercedes-Benz EQB spied

The three-pointed star's plug-in crossover based on the GLB will likely debut some time next year.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQB electric crossover has been spied during testing in Europe.

As with other members of the all-electric EQ range, the EQB is based on an existing model — in this case the GLB — and uses a platform designed primarily for petrol and diesel engine cars.

This strategy affords Mercedes-Benz a lot of flexibility to scale production up or down depending on demand, as well as reducing development costs.

It does sacrifice some of the advantages of an electric car-only platform, though, such as fully flat floor and extra storage space up front.

While the GLC and EQC don't share any exterior body panels, the EQB looks as though it shares most of its body work with the GLB.

At the front, the EQB has new closed-off grille, redesigned fascia, and (possibly) redesigned headlights. The bumper at the back has also been redesigned, as tailpipes are no longer part of the equation.

Interestingly, the number plate has been moved from the tailgate to the bumper, so there should be changes around the tail-lights and below the rear windscreen.

Like the EQC and EQV, we expect the EQB to feature plenty of blue highlights to show off its electric drivetrain. There will also be a set of more aerodynamic alloy wheels.

While the GLB is available in both two- and three-row configurations, it's possible the EQB will be offered strictly as a five-seat vehicle in order to accommodate the car's battery pack.
