Mitsubishi teases Tokyo-bound concept

Mitsubishi has released a single photo of its upcoming concept, inviting a lot of questions.

Mitsubishi has teased a plug-in hybrid crossover concept ahead of its debut at next month’s Tokyo motor show.

The company has said the concept will showcase “a downsized, lower-weight PHEV drivetrain and an electric 4WD system” and that it’ll be a small SUV. That means it’ll be smaller than this year’s Engelberg concept (below), a PHEV SUV that previewed the next Outlander.

While a preview of the next ASX is one possibility, Mitsubishi has recently facelifted its strong-selling compact crossover, and will soon add a 2.4-litre engine to the range – both of which would suggest the little Lancer-based SUV has plenty of life left in its current guise.

There's also the fact this shadowy teaser photo partially reveals a design perhaps too daring for a new ASX, based on what we've seen from the badge so far.

The photo depicts the rear of the boxy concept, which has flared fenders and an almost notchback-style profile. The short boot lid suggests the unnamed concept is a two-and-a-half-box design like the BMW X4 or Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

Even more intriguing are the four round design elements. It’s anybody’s guess as to what they are, though they look like they’d tear off your hand if you stuck it in one of them. They sit atop carbon-fibre covered buttresses separated by a piece of glass that displays… something. The glass appears to be almost level with the boot lid. Where’s the rear window? Good question. Add it to the list.

The whole point of teaser photos is to get people curious and asking questions. With this photo, Mitsubishi has succeeded. We’ll see how interesting the concept really is on October 23.
