2020 Skoda Superb facelift: Australian launch delayed

Skoda Australia has confirmed the updated 2020 Superb range has been delayed due to production shuffling caused by WLTP emissions regulations in Europe.

Initially earmarked for a third quarter launch this year, the facelifted Superb now doesn't have an official arrival date at this point in time, but a safe guess is that the full line-up will rollout into 2020.

"WLTP has pushed back Australia’s start of production for the mid-life facelift," said Paul Pottinger, general manager for corporate communications at Volkswagen Group Australia.

"We’ll convey arrival dates when we can. There’s plenty of current stock available."

The announcement follows similar delays for the related Volkswagen Passat, which should still arrive in entry-level 140TSI guise before the end of this year, with the wider range set to lob Down Under next year.

In case you missed the original announcement, the revised Superb range feature restyled bumpers, narrower LED headlights, full LED tail-lights, Skoda lettering at the back, and a deeper grille.

Skoda has also changed the design of the Superb's 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, added two colours (Crystal Black and Race Blue) to the palette, and introduced double slat bars for some models.

Matrix LED headlights, predictive cruise control, and Emergency Assist, which automatically steers the car safely to the roadside in the case of an emergency, are also available for the first time in a Skoda.

Inside, updates include revised trim pieces and stitching, added chrome on some variants, and a divided storage compartment underneath the wagon's false floor.

Top-spec models come with a 9.2-inch touchscreen navigation system with gesture and voice control in addition to the Volkswagen Group's new MIB3 media interface, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a Canton sound system.

Also headlining the updated Superb (though it won't be coming to Australia) is the addition of the Superb iV plug-in hybrid – the first PHEV offered by the Czech brand.

The iV essentially wedges the Volkswagen Passat GTE's drivetrain underneath the Skoda's body, pairing a 115kW turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. System outputs are rated at 160kW and 400Nm.
