2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA pricing and specs

Mercedes-Benz has expanded its CLA four-door coupe range in Australia with the announcement of two new additions, the CLA240 4Matic and Mercedes-AMG CLA35 4Matic.

Following on from the arrival of the CLA200 earlier this year, the CLA250 and CLA35 are expected to become the volume sellers amongst the CLA range. Later in 2020 the flagship CLA45 4Matic+ will also join the range.

Amongst key changes in the step up to CLA250 guise, are a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 165kW and 350Nm, compared to the CLA200 and its 1.3-litre engine making 120kW and 250Nm.

Power is transferred via a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to on-demand 4Matic all-wheel drive. The CLA250 also rides on multi-link rear suspension and ‘comfort’ lowered suspension with adaptive dampers.

Pricing for the CLA250 starts from $68,800 before on-road costs.

Range-wide features carried over from the CLA200 include AMG line exterior styling with 18-inch alloy wheels, an interior trimmed in fake leather and suede, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start and hands-free boot opening, auto LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

All CLA models come equipped with 64-colour LED ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, satellite navigation, DAB+ radio and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The latest MBUX infotainment system, featuring a 10.25-inch centre screen and linked 10.25-inch instrument cluster also provides functions including conversational voice inputs, touchscreen and touchpad controls, and a range of user-customisable vehicle functions.

In addition the CLA250 gains extra standard equipment like ‘Night Package’ window privacy tint aft of the B-pillar and gloss black exterior trims, ‘Mercedes me Connect’ online features, smartphone controlled remote start, and a panoramic electric glass sunroof.

Safety equipment extends to nine airbags, autonomous emergency braking (dubbed Active Brake Assist with semi-autonomous braking function) blind spot monitoring with exit warning, active lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and pre-safe accident preparation.

Going in to bat for the Mercedes-AMG performance arm, the CLA35 is a new addition slotting beneath the fire-breathing CLA45 due to arrive next year.

As a stepping stone between the 250 and 45, the new CLA35 pushes outputs to 225kW and 400Nm from a tweaked 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, delivered to an ‘AMG Speedshift’ seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes claims the 0-100km/h sprint for the CLA35 will take 4.7 seconds. The price of entry, meanwhile, kicks off from $83,400 plus on-road costs.

Other AMG enhancements include launch control, a bi-modal AMG exhaust, uprated four-piston AMG front brake calipers, and upsized 19-inch alloy wheels.

The body shell has been strengthened up front to aid turn-in precision, while a bolt-in aluminium plate beneath the engine increases torsional stiffness in line with the A35’s performance positioning.

AMG also claims the front steering knuckle, with a radially bolted brake caliper, is derived from the company’s motorsport efforts.

Australian examples will include AMG Ride Control adaptive damping with three driver-selectable settings and a five-mode AMG Dynamic Select drive mode selector (slippery, comfort, sport, sport plus, individual) to allow adjustment of ride, transmission, engine response, steering weight, stability control parameters, and more.

Following in the footsteps of the AMG GT and C63 before it, the AMG A35’s sports steering wheel, trimmed in perforated leather with ‘galvanised’ paddle shifters, also adds a pair of LCD controllers for drive mode on one side of the wheel and driver-selected key functions on the other.

Two-tone Lugano leather trim wraps the electrically-adjustable heated front seats while occupants can activate the standard ‘Energising Comfort Control’ to set cabin ambience to suit the prevailing mood.

Orders for the CLA250 and CLA35 are open now, with customer deliveries expected to begin early in Q1 2020.
