The 2020 Toyota Granvia has been priced for Australia, and it's significantly more expensive than the much-loved Tarago it replaces.
Opting for an eight-seat Granvia adds $2000 to the sticker price, leaving the new base-model people-mover just $271 short of the range-topping Tarago Ultima V6.
Moving up the range, the Granvia VX is priced from $74,990 before on-road costs in both six- and eight-seat guise.
By way of comparison, the best-selling Kia Carnival is priced between $42,490 and $62,790 before on-road costs – although the Granvia is one of the biggest cars in its class, and comes with more standard safety equipment than any of its rivals.
The top-end Granvia now falls just $5000 short of the Mercedes-Benz V220d's starting price.
Power will come from a variation of the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine used in the HiAce, where it makes 130kW and 450Nm. Toyota Australia hasn't confirmed outputs for the Granvia, but we'd suggest they won't stray too far from those figures.
Although it's more expensive than the Tarago it replaces, the Granvia is larger and loaded with more equipment. It gets the full Toyota Safety Sense suite standard, which brings autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, high-speed adaptive cruise, lane departure alert, road-sign recognition and automatic high-beam.
Six seaters will have three rows of individual 'captains chairs' with armrests, while the eight-seater gains a folding two-seat bench as a fourth row.
Climate control across all three/four rows is standard, along with keyless entry and start, dual-side sliding doors, and smartphone mirroring for the infotainment system.
The top-spec VX gains powered rear doors, quilted leather seat trim, and powered backrests with fold-out footrests for the rear captains chairs.
Regardless of model, the Granvia will cost $480 to service every year – although like the HiAce, it requires maintenance every six months.
