The brand's new head of design says Jaguar needs to have both conventional and crossover models to satisfy 'all customers'.

Although sedan sales at Jaguar sedans have fallen behind its crossovers, the brand will continue to offer these more conventional body styles.

Julian Thomson, Jaguar's new chief designer, told Autocar the "world’s not all turning SUV and we will need cars".

According to the man who recently replaced Ian Callum, Jaguar won't become a brand with just crossovers in the forecourt, stating "we will do cars in the future, too".

Thomson explained the company now has "lots of competent SUVs in our showroom", but also needs to satisfy "all customers" with a selection of different drivetrains and body styles.

Jaguar has already confirmed it will launch a new generation of its flagship XJ sedan next year, with the next-generation car set to be a pure electric vehicle.

Reports indicate the new XJ will be built on the company's new modular platform, which supports conventional petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric drivetrains.

The smaller XE, which recently received a facelift, and the XF, which will soon get one, are further away from a full redesign. Thomson hinted these models could be in line for a dramatic reimagining when their time comes.

He also reiterated the company's commitment to having a sports car in its range as it serves as an aspirational goal and are important "flag waving for a premium brand".
