2020 Hyundai Ioniq facelift here before year’s end

Hyundai Australia has confirmed the refreshed 2020 Ioniq eco car family will arrive in local showrooms before the end of the year, having previously set a "second half of 2019" launch date.

Speaking at the local launch of the all-new Venue crossover, Hyundai's local boss, J.W. Lee, said the company is confident the updated range will go on sale by the end of 2019, though didn't go into further detail regarding potential pricing and specification changes.

The facelifted Ioniq dons exterior revisions across Hybrid, Plug-in and Electric variants, while also picking up the latest the Korean brand has to offer in terms of infotainment and driver assistance technologies.

Headlining changes include a new grille, updated bumpers, new LED headlights with revised signatures front and back, along with new alloy wheel designs.

Inside, there's a redesigned dashboard and a new driver's instrument binnacle, while the centre stack offers a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system on higher grades.

There's new capacitive touch controls for the audio and climate control system, too.

Other changes include an adjustable regenerative braking system, a one-pedal driving mode, automatic EV mode engagement for designated "green zones", and a new Eco+ drive mode.

There's no confirmed changes to drivetrains for petrol-electric, however, meaning the Hybrid teams a 1.6-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine making 77kW/147Nm with a 32kW/170Nm electric motor for a system power output of 104kW.

Moving to the Plug-in boosts electric motor power to 44.5kW, and adds a larger 8.9kWh lithium-ion polymer battery for a pure-electric range of 63km. When the battery runs flat, the car can be driven on petrol power. Both the Hybrid and Plug-in send drive to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The updated Electric, meanwhile, should get a larger 38.3kWh lithium polymer battery pack (up from 28kWh), which should boost range to 293km on the stricter WLTP cycle – the previous model claimed 280km on the older NEDC regime.

Other upgrades for the EV model include a more powerful 100kW/295Nm electric motor (up from 88kW), while the on-board charging system is now rated at 7.2kW compared to the outgoing model's 6.6kWh unit.
