Jeep has unveiled another Grand Cherokee variant, designed to keep the ageing full-sized SUV fresh amid competition from lower- and higher-priced rivals.

The Grand Cherokee is sitting on 2037 registrations to date in 2019, down 30.2 per cent on the same point in 2018. Jeep has already unveiled the Upland, Night Eagle, S-Limited, and S-Overland models to keep buyers interested this year, but the Summit is the most expensive model yet.

Priced from $84,450 before on-road costs, the Summit is priced in line with the new Volkswagen Touareg.

It's designed to reach 'luxurious new heights' for the Grand Cherokee line-up with softer 'NaturaPlus' leather seats, a leather instrument binnacle and central armrest, a suede-style headliner, and illuminated door sill plates.

Also included in the standard equipment list is a 19-speaker audio system, bi-xenon headlights, active noise cancellation, eight-way electric front seats, heated seats front and rear, ventilated front seats, and remote engine start.

As with the Grand Cherokee Overland, buyers get a reversing camera, parking sensors, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Outside, the Summit comes with 20-inch chrome wheels and the 'Platinum Package' – that means chrome for the grille, lower bumper, window trim, side sills, rear step and exterior badging. There's also a dual-pane sunroof.

Buyers will be able to spec the 'Signature Leather-Wrapped Interior Package' ($9950) which brings quilted leather seats, and leather door trims. A rear-seat entertainment system with BluRay and DVD player is $2950.

Power comes from Jeep's 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine making 184kW and 570Nm, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
