2020 BMW M5 facelift spied

New lights and bumpers will grace the updated M5, which thankfully will miss out on the Concept 4's eye-catching grille.

The updated BMW M5 has been caught testing on public roads in Europe.

Cosmetic changes include new headlights graphics and a tail-light design in line with those we've seen on the latest 3 Series, X5 and X7 models. The front and rear bumpers will also carry modifications.

Thankfully the updates don't seem to extend to a grille design like the one we saw on the Concept 4 at the Frankfurt motor show.

BMW has yet to confirm what will powered the revised M5, but we suspect it will be a version of the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 currently doing service in a variety of M models, including the current M5 and M8.

In the regular M5 and M8, the motor makes 441kW of power at 6000rpm and 750Nm of torque between 1800 and 5600rpm. The Competition versions of each car boost power output to 460kW.

All of these cars feature a rear-biased all-wheel drive system, and an eight-speed automatic.

At present the M5 Competition is capable of blasting through the 0-100km/h standard in 3.3 seconds, and hitting 200km/h within 10.8s.

Top speed is electronically limited is 250km/h or 305km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.

Given the level of camouflage on this prototype, we expect the updated M5 to debut some next year.
