Ford: Half of European sales will be electrified by 2022

Ford expects 54 per cent of its sales in Europe to come from hybrids and fully electric cars by the end of 2022, with the rest featuring conventional petrol and diesel engines.

It should be noted Ford includes mild hybrids, as well regular hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles, in its calculations.

So far the company has announced or put into showrooms mild-hybrid versions of the Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma, Transit, Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom.

Hybrid drivetrains are also offered in the Kuga and Mondeo wagon, while the Explorer, Kuga, Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom are available with plug-in hybrid powertrains.

With the Focus Electric (above) no longer in production, the company doesn't currently offer a pure-electric vehicle. It has, though, confirmed at least four models in the coming years.

Ford is planning to launch a new Mustang-inspired electric crossover before the end of the year. According to the company, the new EV will have fast charging and a range of 600 kilometres under the WLTP standard.

Next year an electric version of the full-size Transit van will be launched.

As part of the Detroit-based automaker's ever-growing partnership with Volkswagen, Ford will also develop a new Euro-focussed model based on the German firm's MEB EV platform.

The Volkswagen ID.3 (above), a Golf-class hatch launched at the Frankfurt motor show, is the first production vehicle to use the MEB architecture. Depending on the trim level, the ID.3 has a range of between 330 and 550km.

Ford of Europe is also touting a "new utility nameplate". It's not clear if this is the new electric model being co-developed with Rivian, the electric F-150 or something else entirely.
