2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Upland on sale from $61,450

With a new Jeep Grand Cherokee around the corner, FCA is keeping buyers interested in the current one in the way it knows best: a special edition.

Blackhawk, 70th Anniversary, 75th Anniversary, Jet, Night Eagle, S-Limited, S-Overland… Those are just the special editions that have been offered on the current series of Jeep Grand Cherokee, and that’s not even including the ones based on the SRT. It’s time to add another name to that list – the Jeep Grand Cherokee Upland.

Based on the Laredo 4x4 diesel, Jeep claims the limited edition Upland adds $7,000 in value for only an extra $3,500. That puts the price of the Grand Cherokee Upland at $61,450 before on-road costs

For that extra outlay you get the 8.4-inch touchscreen of upper-spec Grand Cherokees instead of the Laredo’s 7.0-inch unit, plus blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

There are plenty of visual changes, too, with unique 20-inch black alloy wheels in Goodyear All-Terrain Wrangler tyres, along with gloss-black finishes on the badges, grille, roof rails, moldings, mirrors, fog- and tail light surrounds. Jeep logos are accented in Desert Sky blue, too.

The interior is much less distinct from the Laredo, differing only by the addition of Desert Sky blue accent stitching on the console, steering wheel and arm rests, as well as the aforementioned larger touch screen. The seats are upholstered in black cloth trim.

The Upland is available only in two colours – Bright White and Diamond Black – and in a single powertrain combination, the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 184kW and 570Nm and mated to an eight-speed automatic.

All 44 examples of the Upland will also come standard with Jeep’s Quadra-Trac II 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case and selectable high- and low-range gearing.

Conversely, the Laredo is available with both the Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine and rear-wheel-drive. Currently, the RWD Laredo 3.6 is being advertised at $47,950 driveaway.

Like on the Laredo, standard equipment includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, eight-way power and heated front seats, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The only option is a single-pane sunroof.

With a release date for the next generation Grand Cherokee as yet unconfirmed but still at least a year away, don’t count on this being the last limited edition of the WK2 series.
