BMW i Hydrogen Next unveiled

The BMW i Hydrogen Next unveiled at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show is said to preview a production car coming around 2022.

According to Car and Driver, the i Hydrogen Next has a driving range of between 490 and 595 kilometres. The car's hydrogen fuel tanks are reportedly located under the rear seat and in the centre tunnel, and can be refilled in around four minutes.

It also features a fuel-cell stack jointly developed by BMW and Toyota as part of their co-operation agreement signed in 2013.

The new stack, which has been undergoing testing since 2015, combines stored hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen to produce water vapour and electricity for a "very powerful" electric motor driving the rear wheels.

BMW told the magazine a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle will be put into production around 2022, and will use the X5 as its basis.

The i Hydrogen Next concept seems to be wearing the same front fascia design we saw on the X5 M prototype spied back in April this year at the Nurburgring.

Other styling changes include gloss black wheel arch protectors, blue alloy wheels, and a restyled rear bumper with blue inserts for the diffuser and a hidden exhaust tip.
