HumanCar to go on sale in 2011

Known as a hand-cranked low mass vehicle (LMV), the HumanCar was originally designed by Professor Charles Samuel Greenwood about four years ago. The car is road legal and registered and is said to do up to 100km/h.

How it works is fairly simple. The occupant gets in, cranks the electric motors like a Matchbox toy car, and then unleashes the 'spring-loaded' electricity, propelling the car. Prof. Charles says the car performs even better with more people in it because the cranked motor gets the application of four human-power wind-ups.

Check out the videos below to see it all in action.

Probably not the safest petrol alternative car, but still, it's an interesting idea. The HumanCar is expected to go on sale for around US$15,000 ($17,000).
