Skoda Klement e-bike showcased at Eurobike

Another automaker introduces an e-mobility solution with Skoda debuting an e-bike.

Skoda’s come full circle. Or is that full cycle?

Around 124 years after Václav Laurin and Václav Klement founded the company and started manufacturing motorised bicycles, Skoda is debuting a segment-busting electric two-wheeler. Appropriately, it’s called the Klement after the aforementioned co-founder.

Following its official debut at this year’s Geneva motor show, the Klement is on the stand at Eurobike, the international bike trade fair taking place in Freidrichshafen from September 4 to 7.

It’s an amusing twist of fate as Václav Klement started his bike company after receiving a rude reply to a letter he sent to a German bike company requesting repairs.

The concept is quite a bit different from any bike Klement would have envisioned. The Klement (the bike, not the man) has an integrated 4kW hub motor and two 1,250Wh lithium-ion batteries.

The hub motor accelerates the bike to a maximum speed of 45km/h, while the batteries afford a range of up to 62km. The mostly aluminium Klement weighs around 25kg and, conveniently, the batteries can be removed and charged using a household power outlet.

You’ll notice it looks a bit different to a conventional e-bike or pedelec, with no visible cables, levers or even a kick-stand. Simply tilt the foot pedals forward to accelerate the Klement and backwards to stop it, similar to a hoverboard.

There’s a front hydraulic brake with ABS and regenerative braking at the rear wheel.

Because this is 2019, there’s a smartphone holder with inductive charging mounted on the crossbar. You can use your smartphone to access Skoda’s apps, which allow you to program features like the Coming Home function (delay-off lights) and to set up a restricted usage area using geofencing. There’s also the option to have an automatically-triggered emergency call in the event of an accident.

Finally, the Klement has plenty of neat LED lighting including LED indicators integrated into the pedals.

The Klement appears to be an impressive package but Skoda hasn’t confirmed yet whether it’ll reach production.
