2020 Hyundai Veloster pricing and specs

The all-new 2020 Hyundai Veloster has been priced and specified for the Australian market, with the three-tier range kicking off at $29,490 plus on-road costs.

Nearly a year since it was initially slated to arrive in local showrooms, the "2+1 door sports coupe" claims to bring upgrades to drivetrains and equipment levels across the line-up, while keeping the price of entry $100 down on the previous iteration.

Three trim levels will be offered – Veloster, Turbo, and Turbo Premium – with two engines available depending on variant along with the option of manual and automatic transmissions across the range.

Kicking off proceedings is the entry-level Veloster, which gets six airbags, 18-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, sports bucket seats, heated side mirrors, leather-appointed steering wheel and gear knob,  LED daytime-running lights, a 3.5-inch TFT multifunction driver's display, and automatic headlights.

As for driver assistance features, all Veloster models get camera-based autonomous emergency braking for city/urban speeds (but no pedestrian or cyclist detection), lane keep assist, driver attention monitoring, hill start assist, a rear view camera with dynamic guidelines, rear parking sensors, and tyre pressure monitoring.

The base Veloster is powered by a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine running the Atkinson cycle, developing 110kW of power and 180Nm of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard, while a six-speed automatic is a $2300 option (from $31,790).

Stepping up to the Veloster Turbo (from $35,490) brings a more sophisticated AEB system bolstered by a radar sensor (auto only), allowing for interurban functionality and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control (auto only), 18-inch gloss black wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4, keyless entry with push-button start, a sports body kit with an upgraded front grille and rear spoiler, LED headlights (low beam) and LED tail-lights, a larger 4.2-inch TFT driver's multifunction display, digital performance gauges, and high-beam assist.

There's also a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation, digital radio (DAB+), electric folding exterior mirrors, cloth/leather combination upholstery, metal sports pedals, a luggage net, and steering-mounted paddle shifters for the auto model.

Rounding out the Turbo specification is what lies under the bonnet – a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine shared with the likes of the i30 N-Line and Elantra Sport.

Outputs are rated at 150kW and 265Nm, with drive channeled to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (from $38,490).

Finally, the Veloster Turbo Premium (from $38,990) gains different 18-inch dark metallic/machined Turbo alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, an eight-way powered driver's seat, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, electrochromatic rear-view mirror, rain-sensing wipers, a Qi-standard wireless phone charger, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Like the Turbo, the Turbo Premium is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual, with the seven-speed DCT available from $41,990.

In terms of options, all models ask for an additional $595 if you want metallic or mica paint, while a contrasting Phantom Black roof is also available for the Veloster Turbo Premium ($1000).

Like the wider Hyundai range, the Veloster family benefits from an Australian-specific chassis and suspension tune, helping to "maximise the high-performance potential of the improved body rigidity and lightweight independent multi-link suspension" – the latter being standard across the line-up.

"Other notable driver focused upgrades over the first-generation Veloster include a quicker-ratio electric power steering system, enhancing steering responsiveness, and Torque Vectoring Control (TVC) which improves performance during cornering," the company adds.

The all-new Veloster range is on sale now.
