2020 Smart EQ Fortwo, Forfour revealed

Daimler has revealed the Smart EQ family, including the Fortwo, Fortwo Cabrio and Forfour, ahead of their public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week.

The German group's city car division is embracing its all-electric future, with the entire range relying solely on battery power.

Compared to the outgoing model, the front fascia of all three body styles has been redesigned with updated headlights (full-LED optional) and a repositioned 'grille' which is now lower down in the front bumper.

Inside, there's "expanded stowage options" for better practicality, while the touchscreen infotainment system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Owners will be able to use the Smart EQ control app on their compatible smartphone app, too, which offers access to vehicle information like charge levels, find parking spaces, get directions, or locating your vehicle if you can't remember where you left it.

Smart says its app has been given an "all-new user interface" which "makes operating the services child's play and turns any Smart into a true connected car".

All Smart EQ models are powered by a 60kW/160Nm synchronous electric motor, hooked up to a 17.6kWh battery pack.

The company claims the EQ Fortwo can accelerate from 0-60km/h in 4.8 seconds, and do 0-100 in 11.6 seconds. As for the larger and heavier EQ Forfour, it'll do 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and hit triple figures in 12.7 seconds.

All models quote a 130km/h top speed – though we doubt most owners would be getting anywhere near that often.

With a 22kW on-board charger (optional in some markets), the battery pack can be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent charge in under 40 minutes.

European customers will also have access to the Plugsurfing charge network – Smart's charge network partner – allowing owners to use "virtually all charging stations", with registration and billing all able to be completed via the Smart EQ control app.

The new Smart EQ line-up will make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week.

In March, parent Daimler sold half of the Smart brand to China's Geely - owner of Swedish marque, Volvo. As part of the deal, Geely will engineer and Daimler will style the next-generation Smart range, which will be produced in China for sale across the world.

Daimler will continue producing Smart vehicles in France until 2022, after which the factory will be converted to produce electric Mercedes-Benz cars.
