2020 Holden Equinox range to be streamlined

Holden is hoping a simplified range will give its Equinox mid-sized SUV a sales boost for the 2020 model year.

The two base models (LS, LS+) will be discontinued from the end of 2019, and the unloved diesel and manual options will be axed.

The starting price for a new Equinox is likely to increase from $27,990 drive-away to more than $32,000 before on-road costs with the revised line-up.

While Holden Australia would not confirm or deny the changes, a bulletin sent to dealers reveals a pared-back petrol-only Equinox range will arrive in showrooms later this year, with four models instead of six.

The revised Equinox range will kick off with the LT, powered by the 127kW 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed automatic previously used in the LS.

A 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, 17-inch alloy wheels, six airbags and automatic headlights are all standard fit on the current LT, along with active safety equipment like lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and power-folding mirrors.

An LT Black Edition will also be offered, adding black mirror caps, a black grille, privacy glass, roof rails, dark fog light bezels, 19-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof to the LT's standard equipment list. It'll be priced from $36,990 drive-away.

Moving up the range, the LTZ will maintain its 188kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. It'll be front-wheel drive as standard.

Compared to the lower-spec cars, the LTZ gains a powered tailgate, automatic parking assist, rain-sensing wipers, leather (heated) seats, wireless phone charging, LED lighting at both ends, Bose speakers and a powered driver's seat.

Finally, the LTZ-V shares its engine with the LTZ, but gains all-wheel drive and more standard kit, including a new-for-2020 360-degree surround-view camera.

Launched in 2017, the Equinox only holds a 3.4 per cent share of the hotly-contested mid-sized SUV market to date in 2019.

But Holden is making inroads – its year-to-date figures represent a 16.2 per cent improvement on its 2018 performance.
