2021 Volkswagen ‘T7’ spied

Volkswagen's next-generation van has been spied with a longer nose and Golf-sourced infotainment.

Photographers have snapped a development prototype believed to be an early mule for the next-generation Volkswagen T7 during testing in Europe.

The German automotive giant has only just started releasing the various members of the updated T6.1 family, which includes the Caravelle, Multivan and Transporter, but the next iteration is on its way already.

Compared to the current model, the T7 features a much longer snout than the T6, which gives a more 'car-like' look according to our photographers, though there's no hiding that this is very much a commercial van.

It's believed the T7 could make the switch to a version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB scalable architecture, which already underpins the likes of the Polo, Golf and Passat passenger cars, which would allow the company to offer a range of mild-hybrid powertrains, the latest in infotainment and connectivity, along with new driver-assistance technologies.

We can see this prototype is running a newer 8.0-inch infotainment unit familiar from various models like the Golf and Passat, though being an early development vehicle its implementation is a bit rough as you can see in the above.

However, since the MQB platform isn't really optimised for commercial use in its current form, it's rumoured the current-generation T6.1 vans could still be kept on sale for a while for heavy-duty use.

Given the updated T6.1 range is only just starting to hit the market, the T7 generation of vans could still be a few years away.
