Skoda Kamiq, Scala to offer wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

Skoda has officially launched its latest infotainment software with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, debuting in the all-new Kamiq crossover and related Scala hatchback.

Dubbed 'Wireless Smart Link', the feature "makes for even more convenient use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto" by allowing compatible smartphones to use the mirroring features through a bluetooth connection, rather than a USB cable.

"Once this has been done, the phone will always connect automatically via Wireless SmartLink as soon as the driver enters the car, provided the Bluetooth function is activated," Skoda says in its press release.

"The smartphone is paired via Bluetooth; the data for mirroring is transmitted over WiFi."

In addition to the available wireless smartphone mirroring function, the Kamiq and Scala will also be offered with an optional phone box, which amplifies the phone's cellular reception using the vehicle's external aerial, and charges compatible devices using Qi-standard inductive charging.

Skoda says the new optional features add completely wireless in-car smartphone connectivity.

Australia

Skoda's local division was unable to confirm at this stage whether the Kamiq and Scala will offer the new smartphone-compatible features when they launch early next year, though indicated it's definitely interested.

"Our approach to Skoda in Australia has always been ‘more car for your money’ and having an upgraded system such as this in our cars certainly fits that philosophy," said Kurt McGuinness, PR and brand experience manager for Skoda Australia.

While the Kamiq and Scala have debuted these features for the brand overseas, the facelifted Superb sedan and wagon are tipped to be first to offer wireless Apple CarPlay in Australia when the range launches later in the third quarter of 2019.
