2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB35 4Matic revealed

Mercedes-AMG's latest compact performance car has broken cover, complete with seven seats.

The new GLB35 will be arriving in Australia in the second quarter of 2019, ready to take on... well, we're not exactly sure.

By now, the AMG 35 formula is pretty clear. It's been applied to the A-Class hatchback and sedan, and the CLA, and it'll eventually be applied to the as-yet unreleased GLA, too.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 225kW and 400Nm, put to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Up to 50 per cent of the engine's torque can be sent to the rear wheels.

Where the A35 hot-hatch will hit 100km/h in less than five seconds, the bigger AMG GLB35 takes 5.2 seconds.

Compared to the regular GLB, the AMG 35 has a stiffer suspension and redesigned wheel carriers, subframes, and steering knuckles – all designed to make it corner flatter and faster, in keeping with the AMG badge on the bootlid.

There's a set of four-piston fixed braking calipers and 350mm discs on the front axle, and single-piston calipers clamping 330mm discs on the rear. They're hidden behind a set of 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, although buyers can spec wheels up to 21 inches in diameter.

Along with the larger rolling stock, the GLB35 gains a unique rear bumper and a lip spoiler at the rear, along with a much more aggressive fascia and grille up front. The chunky matte black detailing around the wheel arches and side skirts remains.

Inside, the interior has been given a lift with AMG-specific seats and a racier steering wheel, along with some chrome, red and black detailing. As with the entire A- and B-Class ranges, the GLB 35 gets a dual-widescreen MBUX infotainment system on the dash.

As with the regular GLB range, the AMG 35 comes with the option of seven seats. With the third row folded you get 560L of boot space, expanding to 1755L with the middle row flat.
