2021 Ford Bronco patents hint at removable doors

The Ford Bronco could be available with removable doors, as well as minimalist tubular doors.

Patent filings uncovered by AutoGuide show Ford is working on ways of incorporating side airbags into tubular doors (above) with the inflation mechanism mounted well away from the doors themselves.

Ford has also submitted a number of designs to improve side impact protection when the car's doors are removed completely.

These reportedly include chains, links, and a telescoping rod incorporating a built-in airbag (below).

Earlier this year a report emerged stating the new Bronco will be available with both a folding canvas top and removable doors as Ford chases a part of the market the Jeep Wrangler has all to itself at the moment.

Patents discovered in April seemed to back up claims regarding its canvas top, and this latest finding seems to indicate the Bronco could be available with removable doors and, possibly, tubular doors too.

The new Ford Bronco will based on the platform of the Ranger ute, but will have a unique retro body with round headlights. Production of the new Bronco will reportedly begin in late 2020, and the car will be available as both a two- and four-door.
