Toyota TJ Cruiser heading for production – report

A production version of the Toyota TJ Cruiser concept (pictured) will reportedly arrive in Japanese showrooms starting in 2020.

Japanese dealer sources have told Best Car Toyota is planning to launch a model based on the TJ Cruiser concept from the 2017 Tokyo motor show.

The new car is said to measure 4300mm long, 1775mm wide, 1620mm tall, and ride a 2750mm wheelbase. If true, the TJ Cruiser will be more compact than the C-HR, but have a longer wheelbase and taller body.

Thanks to its boxy shape and sliding rear doors, it will much more spacious and easier to access than the marginally larger C-HR crossover. The TJ Cruiser could be offered with the choice of five or seven seats.

While the car will have the utility of a van or people mover, the TJ Cruiser will retain some of the concept's off-roader styling cues, like its chunky tyre configuration.

Drivetrain options are said to include the 1.8-litre hybrid setup from the Prius, as well as a 2.0-litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine. The RAV4's 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain is also possibility.

In 2017 we reported Toyota had trademarked the TJ Cruiser name in the USA, and speculated it could be used on a crossover based FT-4X concept.

Unveiled at the 2017 New York motor show, the FT-4X was a crossover with FJ Cruiser-inspired styling and based on the C-HR's platform.

It's unknown if the TJ Cruiser will be sold outside of Japan and, likely, Asia, where small people movers are still popular.
