BMW ConnectedDrive: Adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist added to app store

If you check your bank statement, you’ll probably notice a lot of separate subscription fees.

From Netflix to Spotify, seemingly everything is now following the subscription model. BMW is now extending this to technical features in your car.

Following BMW’s introduction of a subscription for Apple CarPlay, PaulTan.org is reporting features like High Beam Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go will be exclusively available via the ConnectedDrive app store in European markets. The two features currently appear on the German ConnectedDrive website and say: “Available soon”.

Naturally, any hardware will still need to be present before you can download these features over the air.

There’s no word yet on how much a subscription for these services would cost and if there would be an initial cost to ensure your BMW can support the feature. As BMW’s video demonstrates, if you haven’t upgraded your car through ConnectedDrive, pressing the physical button for the feature will display a message in the gauge cluster reading, “Function acquirable.”

BMW’s ConnectedDrive store currently includes a raft of available subscriptions, from real-time traffic and parking services to Microsoft Office 365.

BMW is currently the only automaker to charge a subscription fee for Apple CarPlay. This allows buyers to pay less upfront than before but the move has been controversial as many cars come with the feature at no extra cost.
