2020 BMW X5 pricing and specs

BMW Australia has confirmed full pricing and specifications for the revised 2020 X5 line-up, following confirmation of three new variants last week.

The new entry point to the range is the X5 xDrive25d (from $99,900 plus on-road costs), debuting a four-cylinder engine for the new-generation model and dragging the starting price below $100,000.

Despite its 'base' model status, the xDrive25d still comes relatively well equipped, with highlights including 20-inch light alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, leatherette upholstery, comfort access and keyless start, brown fine wood high-gloss trim inserts, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, dual-12.3-inch displays for the driver and infotainment system, wireless smartphone charging and Apple CarPlay.

Buyers also get adaptive LED headlights, aluminium roof rails, heated front seats, the Driving Assistant Professional suite of active safety and assistance systems, and Parking Assistant Plus including a 360-degree camera system.

The entry-level X5 also gets a subscription to Connected Package Professional, which includes Remote Services,. BMW Connected+, the intelligent voice assistant, real-time traffic information, USB map updates, along with Concierge Services.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel making 170kW and 450Nm, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system. BMW claims a 7.5-second sprint to 100km/h.

Also new to the range is the X5 xDrive45e (from $129,900 plus on-road costs) becoming the first plug-in hybrid to be offered in the new-generation X5 range.

Unlike the previous PHEV variant, the xDrive45e pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six with an electric motor and 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack, good for system outputs of 290kW and 600Nm – up 60kW and 150Nm on the previous xDrive40e.

With the extra grunt the X5 PHEV can hit 100km/h from a standstill in 5.6 seconds (down 1.3 seconds) while doubling its EV driving range to up to 65 kilometres per charge thanks to its battery capacity being approximately 2.5 times larger.

Additional standard kit for the xDrive45e includes the M Sport Package, adaptive two-axle air suspension, bi-colour 20-inch M light alloys with run-flat tyres, Vernasca leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and Aluminium Tetragon trim inserts.

Finally, the new flagship model is the X5 M50i xDrive (from $151,900 plus on-road costs), taking the torch from the temporarily-discontinued M50d.

Headlining the spec sheet is a 390kW/750Nm 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 good for a 4.3-second dash to triple figures – so your keeps should never be late to school.

Equipment levels match that of the outgoing M50d, meaning there's standard 22-inch M light alloys with bi-colour finish, an M Performance Exhaust, M Sport Differential, M sport Brakes, M Exterior Design package with Cerium Grey accents, metallic paint as a no-cost option, Integral Active Steering, BMW Laserlight headlights, BMW Individual leather finish for the dashboard, soft-close doors, heated cup holders up front, lumbar support, four-zone climate control, and a 16-speaker harman/kardon premium surround sound system.

Rounding out the MY20 changes is the availability of a new factory tow package (also optional on the new X6 and X7) which ups the maximum towing capacity to 3500kg for all X5 variants with the exception of the xDrive25d and xDrive45e.

For the four-cylinder and plug-in hybrid models, the maximum tow rating is 2700kg. The maximum downball load is 280kg for the xDrive30d, xDrive40i, M50d and M50i, while the xDrive45e's rating is 180kg and the xDrive25d's is 270kg.

It's worth noting the tow package is only available for xDrive25d variants fitted with the M Sport package.

Additionally, BMW Australia dealers can supply and fit an approved Tongue Kit and Wiring Harness – incorporating a tongue, ball, bracket and 'D' shackles, along with a 12-pin 'flat' plug and wiring loom – for $700 including GST.

The updated X5 range is on sale now, ahead of deliveries commencing in the fourth quarter.
