2020 BMW X6: Initial details

BMW Australia has confirmed the initial line-up for the all-new X6 SUV coupe, ahead of its sales launch during the fourth quarter of this year.

Pricing and specifications are still to be announced, but we know the X6 will launch with three variants – xDrive30d, xDrive40i and M50i xDrive.

Going by previous-generation models, the X6 is likely to carry a circa-$7000 premium over the equivalent X5, so expect the new xDrive30d to kick off around the $120,000 mark given the X5 xDrive30d is priced from $112,900 plus on-road costs.

Power in the xDrive30d comes from a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six diesel making 195kW of power at 4000rpm and 620Nm of torque between 2000 and 2500rpm.

BMW claims a 0-100 sprint in 6.5 seconds for the 'base' X6, with fuel use rated at 6.1-6.6L/100km depending on configuration (according to the international press materials).

Next in the line-up is the xDrive40i, powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six petrol engine. Outputs are rated at 250kW (@6500rpm) and 450Nm (@1500-2500rpm).

The six-cylinder petrol variant should hit triple figures in a brisk 5.5 seconds, while using between 8.0 and 8.6L/100km.

Finally, the stand-in flagship until the full-fat X6 M arrives will be the M50i xDrive, powered by a beefy 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 390kW at 5500-6000rpm and 750Nm at 1800-4600rpm.

The M Performance variant claims a 0-100 dash of 4.3 seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h – not that the latter really matters in speed-conscious Australia. Fuel use is rated at 10.4-10.7L/100km in the international release depending on vehicle configuration.
