BMW Australia has confirmed pricing for a trio of new X5 variants bound for local showrooms before the end of the year, slotting in the base, middle and top of the range.
During a presentation at the local launch for the new X3 M and X4 M performance SUVs, the Bavarian marque's local division confirmed a sub-$100,000 starting price for the new entry point of the X5 range – the xDrive25d.
Power in the X5 xDrive25d comes from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel developing 170kW of power and 450Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels. BMW claims a 7.5-second sprint to 100km/h.
That's 25kW and 170Nm down on the six-cylinder xDrive30d, though it's also $13,000 more affordable, at $99,900 plus on-road costs, putting it on par with the base Mercedes-Benz GLE300d, also priced from $99,900.
Also set to join the line-up is be the X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid (above), which will be priced from $129,900 plus on-road costs when it hits local showrooms – $14,000 dearer than the xDrive40i six-cylinder petrol model.
The X5 PHEV pairs a 210kW 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six petrol engine with an 82kW electric motor and on-board lithium-ion battery pack, good for system outputs of 290kW and 600Nm and a 0-100 time of 5.6 seconds.
Despite the beefy outputs, the xDrive45e is claimed to use as little as 2.1L/100km on the combined European cycle (Australian specs TBA), and travel almost 80 kilometres on electric power alone.
Finally, the X5 range will be headed by the M50i (above), at least until the X5 M hits Australia, priced from $151,900 plus on-road costs.
That's $2000 more than the temporarily-discontinued M50d quad-turbo diesel, but the M50i packs a some extra punch for the extra cash.
Powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol motor, the X5 M50i develops a meaty 390kW of power and 750Nm of torque, making for a claimed 0-100 time of just 4.3 seconds.
We're still waiting for a full rundown of standard equipment for each new X5 variant, so stay tuned for a pricing and specifications breakdown in the lead-up to their launch.
