Peugeot Australia has launched the special-edition 308 GT warm hatch, priced from $39,990 plus on-road costs.
UPDATE, 13/8/19: Peugeot Australia has confirmed the 308 GT is fitted with a petrol particulate filter, making the new model one of the first vehicles in Australia available with such technology. See article for details.
The first time the GT variant has been available in facelifted guise, the 308 GT is limited to 140 units in Australia and packs some features and equipment not currently offered on the local 308 line-up.
For starters there's the engine, a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit making 165kW at 5500rpm and 285Nm at 1750rpm.
Drive is sent to the front wheels via a new eight-speed Aisin automatic transmission with torque converter – the first time this shifter has been available in Australia.
The local division hasn't quoted performance figures, though Peugeot's UK site lists a 7.4-second sprint from 0-100km/h, while fuel use is rated at 6.0L/100km on the combined cycle.
Interestingly, Peugeot Australia has confirmed local versions will be fitted with a petrol particulate filter, making the 308 GT one of the first vehicles on sale Down Under to be fitted with a PPF.
According to the French brand, the proprietary exhaust filter is able to handle fuel with an average sulphur ratio of 40ppm, meaning it can tolerate 95 RON and 98 RON premium unleaded in Australia (50ppm max) – with a skew towards 98 RON.
"While fuel quality in Australia is behind that of Europe and many other developed markets, our PPF systems have been designed to work with poorer quality fuels," said a spokesperson from the PSA engineering division.
"The Australian market is at a crossroads. Given all vehicles are now fully imported . to Australia a choice has to be made between offering vehicles like ours with advanced drivetrains, or having customers miss out. Our intention is to ensure customers can enjoy Peugeot’s for a long time to come.”
Standard equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop&go function, 18-inch 'Diamant' alloy wheels, dual chrome exhaust outlets, GT badging, performance-tuned suspension, contrasting red stitching, rear privacy glass, full-LED headlights, front seats with electric lumbar support and massage function, black mirror caps, alloy pedals, and keyless entry with push-button start.
The GT also gets the Driver Sport Pack – which brings an "amplified, sportier engine note", red illuminated instrument display, performance data readouts, firmer steering response and sharper throttle response with a press of the console-mounted 'Sport' button.
The 308 GT's spring and damper rates have been stiffened by "between 10 and 20 per cent" compared to the standard 308, while the ride height has been lowered by 7mm at the front and 10mm at the rear.
Six exterior colours will be offered, including Hurricane Grey (solid), Magnetic Blue (pictured), Pearl White, Ultimate Red, Nera Black and Platinum Grey. Metallic colours (Magnetic Blue, Artense Grey and Nera Black) incur a $590 charge, while 'premium' colours (Ultimate Red and Pearl White) add $1050.
"The 308 GT will give us the ability to offer a vehicle that leverages Peugeot Sport’s experience while still maintaining the comfort and practical features of a vehicle that is driven daily," said Ben Farlow, managing director for Peugeot Australia.
"The arrival of 308 GT also kicks-off a period of new product arrivals for Peugeot, with the all-new 508 following close on the 308 GTs heels."
Like the wider Peugeot range, the 308 GT is covered by the company's five year, unlimited kilometre warranty and five-year roadside assistance package.
So far this year (as of July 31), 245 Peugeot 308s have been registered in Australia, an increase of of 32.4 per cent compared to the same period last year.
