Fisker preparing electric ute

Fisker is developing a pure-electric ute to sit alongside its Tesla Model Y rival, the company's founder has confirmed.

Details about the ute are scant, but Henrik Fisker overnight tweeted a mockup of a ute tailgate and canopy, and confirmed the brand's next models will share a platform with the as-yet unnamed SUV.

"ALL automotive segments have to be electrified!" Fisker tweeted.

"After our Fisker electric SUV, we have already decided on our next 2 EV’s [sic] on the same platform!"

The world of electric utes is expected to expand rapidly over the coming years; Tesla has a pickup in the works, Ford is developing an electric F-150, and startup Rivian has significant backing from Amazon.

Fisker has previously confirmed its electric SUV will be coming to Australia, although timing is yet to be confirmed. Given our market's insatiable desire for utes – the Toyota HiLux is the best-selling car in the country, with the Ford Ranger not too far behind – it seems logical to suggest the ute will join the crossover on our shores.

Right-hand drive production has been confirmed for the Rivian, which could be arriving in Australia by 2022.

We know the SUV will have an 80kWh battery pack as standard, and a range around 480km. Dual-motor all-wheel drive will be offered, along with 22-inch alloy wheels.

Production of the all-electric Fisker SUV will begin in the second half of 2021, suggesting a 2022 arrival is on the cards. Fisker also confirmed the car will be offered in the UK.
