2018-20 Kia Optima recalled

Kia Australia has issued a recall for the 2018-2020 model-year Optima sedan over concerns the autonomous emergency braking system may fail to activate.

According to the Korean manufacturer, the 'Frontal Collision-Avoidance Assist' software may have an error, which means the emergency brake function may not work when approaching a stationary vehicle.

If the condition occurs, the Optima's "braking assist may not activate during a frontal collision, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users".

There are 667 units affected by this recall, sold between 21 December 2018 and 2 August 2019 – a VIN list is available here.

Speaking with Drive, a spokesperson for Kia Australia said "there have been no reports of Forward Collision Warning software failure in Australia and no reports of accidents which could relate to it".

Owners of recalled Optima models will be contacted by Kia Australia via mail, and advised to get in touch with their preferred dealer to arrange the inspection and repair of their vehicle – the appointment should take "approximately 45 minutes".
